About Rocketship Rocketship Mateo Sheedy Elementary School is a college-preparatory charter elementary school focused on the neediest students in San Jose. Our student population is approximately 87% Free and Reduced Meals and 65% English Language Learners. In its second year (2008-09), Rocketship will educate 320 students (K-4th). Fewer than 10% of Latinos who live in downtown San Jose have attended a college or university, unable to pursue degrees in higher education due to poor academic preparation. Founded by passionate and dedicated educators, Rocketship’s vision is to ensure that our students grow into responsible, compassionate, highly educated citizens who become active leaders in their communities after attending and graduating from a college or university. Our academic goal is for every child who starts with us in Kindergarten to reach grade level by third grade. About the Role We are looking for great teachers who have the heart, expertise, and dedication needed to help every student succeed. Rocketship teachers specialize in either Literacy or Math and teach that subject all day instead of teaching one class of students in multiple subjects. As a professional development school, we offer our staff a unique chance to develop subject area expertise far beyond what is possible in a traditional elementary school. Rocketship’s career ladder gives teachers the opportunity to become a ‘Master Teacher’ in either Literacy or Math, teaching approximately half-time and mentoring other teachers in their subject area during the remainder of the school day.
